First things first, and when my daughter came home from the office Friday evening Mabel Watson Payne before doing anything else claimed her right to go through the handbag (which is capacious – really more like a portmanteau than a purse). At first she tossed the spotted scarf out of her way in order to go after the writing implements. Then, tiring of those, she returned to the scarf in case it might offer up any hitherto undiscovered possibilities. And it did!
When the scarf-tent-hiding-flapping game was over, she decided to wear it while pursuing a variety of other investigations until dinner time, when it went back on its proper peg in the closet.
