The minute I arrived for a visit this afternoon Mabel Watson Payne whisked the leather gloves out of my backpack and folded them into the box her most recent pair of shoes came in, which serves her as an over-the-arm purse.
We played hide-and-seek with the hippo among the geraniums. A new wind-up monkey also entered the game.
Later, Mabel showed me her retro animal/number cards, a present brought home from Portland. After studying this picture of ducks, we occupied ourselves for more than an hour making ducks out of Play-Doh. She was very particular about the shape and size of the beaks. She likes to say the word
beak.
