German minimalist Imi Knoebel (b. 1940) has appeared
once before on this rolling screen, and he has been a good one to watch.This time around the work all dates from 2011, acrylic on aluminum. The three paintings above are part of the series called
Anima mundi. Those below are from the
Kartoffelbild series. And although it is impossible not to respect Knoebel's seriousness in the
Kartoffelbild paintings, if I had one hanging in my house I am sure I would feel unpleasantly challenged all the time by its complicated, self-cancelling agenda. On the other hand I could live with an
Anima Mundi (or several) forever and remain happily free of any need to think about it (or them) at all.
