Greg Curnoe (1936-1992) made himself a heavyweight in regional Canadian art and put regional Canadian art on the contemporary map (within Canada) during the combustible 1960s.
In 2001 the Art Gallery of Ontario organized a memorial retrospective, but Curnoe has never found an audience in the U.S. During his lifetime he resented the fact that no American museum gave him a show and no American gallery signed him.
This indifference has not diminished since the artist's accidental death at a too-early age.
