The German government commissioned the "Barcelona Pavilion" from Mies van der Rohe of the Bauhaus for an international exposition in 1929. The building's intended function was temporary. In 1930 it was demolished and the materials sold for scrap. In 1933 the Bauhaus ceased to exist, after the Nazis gained power. Only black-and-white photographs of the former pavilion survived. In the 1980s a new version
– said to be a faithful copy
– was constructed on the same site, this time as a shrine to architecture.
