Lupin & Poppy

More hand-colored lantern-slides from Frances Benjamin Johnston's trip to California in 1917. Above, one of many large gardens she photographed there. This one evidently accommodated a natural-seeming, meadow-like space dense with lupin and poppy.

The country retreat at bottom was built in Hillsborough by Willis Jefferson Polk for Templeton Crocker. The building and grounds were finished in 1915, shortly before Frances Benjamin Johnston arrived to preserve their appearance. The mansion survives today as a school, but the gardens no longer exist.
