Rearranged Ruins

Giovanni Paolo Panini
Roman Capriccio with Pantheon
1735

Many obscure Italian painters of the 17th and 18th centuries turned out canvases filled with fantastical arrangements (or rearrangements) of Roman architecture (or Roman-like elements of architecture). Wealthy English visitors bought countless examples. Many such tourist trophies inevitably made their way  like these  into the Royal Collection.
