Bible stories became dark and literally twisted during the 17th century. The portion of the royal Spanish collection now housed at the Prado is spectacularly rich in 17th century religious painting, consistently haunted as it is by an underlying reverence for Titian and by the more immediate shadows of Caravaggio.
