Giandomenico Tiepolo (1727-1804) effectively abandoned his painting career during the last two decades of the 18th century. After the death of his famous father Giambattista in 1770, vitality departed from the Venetian Rococo style itself. Neo-classicism was making a strong claim to the future, uncongenial as the change must have been to Giandomenico. His father had left the family financially secure. Consequently the son could retreat into Arcadian fantasy, cultivating elaborate cycles of personal and private drawings that celebrated his final freedom from patrons.
