According to Peter Schatborn in Drawn to Warmth (catalogue issued by the Rijksmuseum in 2001), the Roman scenes painted by Johannes Lingelbach (1622-1674) were executed in Amsterdam – with an eye to the tastes of the commercial art market – after the artist's return from his European travels of 1642-1650.

Schatborn also summarizes the career of the lesser-known Dutch artist Jan Worst, whose drawings appear below.  "Arnold Houbraken wrote of Jan Worst: 'His [Johannes Lingelbach's] contemporary and particularly close friend, Jan Worst, painted fine Italian landscapes.  He was with him in Rome.  One seldom sees his paintings, since he spent most of his time drawing on paper, which drawings were held in high esteem by the connoisseurs.'  Lingelbach was in Italy between 1644 and 1650 and Worst must consequently also have been working there at around this time.  His stay may have lasted from the mid-1640s to the first half of 1655, but we have no definite information about this.  The rare autograph inscriptions on drawings reveal that he was in France in July 1655 and January 1656.  Drawings have been attributed to Worst on the basis of signatures or inscriptions.  There are no known paintings by him."
