"Born in 1591 in Antwerp, and supposedly first trained under Abraham Janssens, Seghers spent an extended period in Italy beginning ca. 1610, and was thereafter in Spain. In Rome he belonged to Caravaggio's circle and seems to have had especially close contact with Gerrit van Honthorst. After 1620 he was again in Antwerp, where he was active under the influence of Rubens and van Dyck. During the Roman period Seghers painted several nocturnal scenes in the manner of Honthorst on themes favored within the circle of Caravaggio, such as Peter's Denial of Christ. Upon his return to Antwerp he thought it prudent to abandon his tenebroso style. His first Antwerp works still bear the stamp of the Caravaggesque manner, but from ca. 1625 onward his style gravitates ever more toward the school of Rubens. Seghers died in Antwerp in 1651."
