The Albigensian Crusade ordered by Pope Innocent III, and led by Simon de Montfort, was an invasion of southwestern France in the early thirteenth century by knights from north and central France. A widespread popular movement called Catharism or Albigensianism essentially had rejected the Church's authority and set up alternative forms of worship. Historians estimate that, over the course of a twenty-year period, more than one hundred thousand of these so-called heretics were killed in the Church's name, and their doctrines effectively eradicated.
