The sculpture garden on the roof of the
San Francisco Museum of Modern Art has rotated in this 1976 piece by
Tony Smith called
Throwback. After yesterday's post about Minimalism in Vienna it seemed especially pleasing to see classic Minimalism from the Seventies accorded some prominence here in San Francisco. Smith died only a few years after making
Throwback. I was watching an interview last night with his daughter, all-around artist
Kiki Smith, where she expressed her doubts aloud that her own career could ever have amounted to much if her father hadn't died when he did and removed himself from her path.
