Perino del Vaga Maiden and Unicorn 16th century drawing British Museum |
Perino del Vaga (1501-1547) lived a short life by current standards – not reaching the age of fifty – but a long life in art. During the first half of the sixteenth century, as the Renaissance reached its peak and segued into Mannerism, he worked and studied with many of the best artists in Florence, in Rome, and in Genoa. These included Raphael, Michelangelo, Rosso Fiorentino, Parmigianino, and Giulio Romano. Perino was original and prolific, yet he has throughout the ages remained somehow outside the pantheon of his famous peers.
