The Neapolitan painter Luca Giordano (1634-1705) held office in Spain as Court Painter from 1692 to 1702. Famous for facility and for speed, Giordano covered many ceilings and many canvases. He bridged the historical divide between an earlier 17th-century style of weighty gesture and the new spirit of decorative fantasy that would dominate the 18th century.
