Before the Revolution

Nicolas Lancret
La Camargo Dancing, c. 1730

The collections at the National Gallery in Washington DC are extra-strong in French art from the century before the Revolution. The American business tycoons who shaped the collection loved to decorate their houses with 18th century French artifacts (nostalgic no doubt for the days before democracy spoiled the fun).
