Giuseppe MacPherson Self-portrait 1770s |
Eighteenth-century Italian painter Giuseppe MacPherson was commissioned by agents of George III to make miniature portraits on ivory of famous painters.
Hundreds of these miniatures survive in the Royal Collection at Windsor, all characterized by lavish detail and an earnest desire for accuracy. The artist's portrait of himself (above) is wonderful in its frankness and surely too unflattering not to be accurate.
