In these first two sketches Claude Lorrain (1600-1682) can be observed during the construction stages, pulling together his idealized landscape compositions. These are now preserved at the Clark Art Institute. Below, a drawing (more formal and finished) from the National Gallery of Art. Both institutions have substantial collections of Claude's work dating back to ages when his reputation was high. Nowadays his serene, symmetrical construction are largely out of fashion. Fortunately, art museums tend to retain and protect even the pictures they no longer esteem. And better times will arrive for Claude again. He can wait.
