Giuseppe Maria Mitelli Title Plate L'Arti per via - Street-criers of Bologna 1660 etching British Museum |
In 1660 Giuseppe Maria Mitelli etched and published a suite of forty prints documenting some of the street criers to be found in mid-17th century Bologna. Curators write that "the edition in the BM is an early one, before the first as described by Bertarelli. It has a variant title which lacks any reference to Annibale Carracci (Bertarelli's first edition being 'Di Bologna l'arti per via d'Anibal Caraci.')" The British Museum sounds slightly skeptical about the contribution of Annibale Carracci to this project. Publication was occurring in 1660 for the first time, and this was fifty years after Annibale's death. In those fifty years his fame and the value of association with his name had dramatically increased.
