The picture galleries of the Capitoline Museums in Rome were filled in earlier centuries by donations from successive Popes, almost as if this museum were an annex of the Vatican picture galleries. The Capitoline complex while still under Papal rule evolved into one of Europe's earliest public art museums.

Garofalo (above) from an earlier generation, felt no need of elaborate display like Veronese's (below) to convey Glory. Instead of a writhing crowd of participants (as below) Garofalo planted his Doctors of the Church at the sides, like supporting pillars. The aura of holiness around the weightless Madonna was then achieved by a circle of lucid, simplified emblems (the specific blessings she confers) rather than massed glowing cherub-heads.
