American Galleries

Tourists seemed patriotically to gravitate toward the American art at the National Gallery, leaving the European rooms relatively empty. Personally I did not spontaneously find myself expending many pixels on the American things – obstructed by enthusiasts as they tended to be – but did manage the few below, and they will help me remember what I saw.

Thomas Sully
The Coleman Sisters, 1844

Augustus Saint-Gaudens
Shaw Memorial, 1900

John Singleton Copley
Watson and the Shark, 1778
