Virginia Oldoini, Countess of Castiglione (1837-1899) poses above as Elvira, heroine of the bel canto opera I Puritani by Vincenzo Bellini. Pierre-Louis Pierson and his large-format camera collaborated with her on numerous role-playing dress-up projects of the 1860s. The Countess also hired painters to embellish selected prints, and in several cases embellished them with her own bold brushstrokes.
