Carlo Maratti (1625-1713) was the dominant painter in Rome at the end of the 17th century.  He was the first restorer of Raphael's frescoes at the Vatican and at the Farnesina (the paintings were about 150 years old when he refurbished them). Publicly and loudly Maratti proclaimed himself the heir of Raphael's pure Roman tradition, as passed down via Giulio Romano and the Carracci to Andrea Sacchi (who taught Maratti). Connoisseurs collecting in the 18th century tended to rank Carlo Maratti at his own extremely high valuation  for many decades after his death there was voracious pursuit of any portable paintings, prints or drawings he left behind  which also created a brisk market for mass-produced copies.  But by the 20th century no one any longer perceived the crucial resemblance to Raphael. In fact, the decorum and sweetness that Maratti saw in Raphael and expressed in his own work were no longer fashionable qualities in art at all.
