"Pompeo Batoni has been described as 'Italy's last Old Master' and he was certainly the last great Italian personality to dominate painting in Rome, where he spent virtually his whole career after settling there in 1727."
"In a varying degree, all three artists [Marco Benefial, Pierre Subleyras, and Pompeo Batoni] take up special positions on the borderline between Rococo and Neo-classicism. These masters, and even Batoni in pictures farthest on the road to Neo-classicism, stuck tenaciously to Late Baroque formulae of composition. Nor is the lyric, languid, and often sentimental range of expressions really divorced from contemporary painting."
