Raiding the Hedge
Mabel Watson Payne is at present infatuated with leaves, either dry or fresh. My daughter wrote recently here about this singular predilection, and I had a good chance to observe it this afternoon when we climbed Nob Hill to visit Huntington Park. After swinging for a nice long while on the swings in the bright cold summer air, we settled on a bench for a rest. But were soon busy with plucking and studying leaves.
When playground time was over, Mabel carried her favorite leaf all the way home and helped me arrange it on the open pages of the dictionary for its portrait.
