The Guercino self-portrait below was only identified as such in 2005, shortly before its purchase by the National Gallery. According to the patchy information available online, the picture was donated to a charity auction in New England in 2004 as an unknown work by an unknown artist, then passed with lightning speed through the hands of several dealers (back and forth across the Atlantic) before reaching a major museum.
