European portraits, 1670-1680

John Michael Wright
Portrait of Barbara Villiers, Duchess of Cleveland
ca. 1670
National Portrait Gallery, London

During the 1660s Barbara Villiers dominated the English court, while bearing a succession of children, some of them acknowledged as royal bastards and others with more doubtful or disputed paternity. After 1670 her direct influence over Charles II began to fade, but she lived on in splendor with a succession of lovers for another forty years, laughing at the multitudes who insulted her as a debauched and shameless wanton.
