Agostino Aglio Studies of Trees & Forest Scenery (title page) 1831 lithograph British Museum |
I like to imagine that at least some of the ancient and glorious British trees rendered by Agostino Aglio in 1831 might still be alive 185 years later. This is of course possible, though not perhaps very likely, and in any case there would be no possibility of identifying the specific trees involved. On the other hand, the gardens and parks where the artist found his stupendous subjects have not yet disappeared. They probably contain – if not any of these very trees – at least many reasonably similar trees.
