The Comte de Caylus (1692-1765) was an aristocrat who had learned to make etchings and a man who prided himself on exquisite taste. A close contemporary of Antoine Watteau, Caylus outlived him by more than forty years, and went a great way toward appropriating that artist's particular graces. His etched Watteau figures are charming mannequins, but he could not make them move.
