The four Italian artists grouped here – Perino del Vaga, Parmigianino, Girolamo da Carpi, Alessandro Allori – all earned substantial incomes during the middle decades of the 16th century from designing painted decorations – often with stylized human figures – to extend and enhance the three-dimensional architectural ornamentation already existing on church and palace walls and ceilings.
