Already under construction on the south bank of the Thames is Renzo Piano's "city in the sky." It goes by the almost unbelievably sinister name of The Shard and will be s-o-o-o-o-o-o tall that it will not only dwarf all other London structures but will also claim a dubious distinction as the tallest building in Western Europe.
If the planners were hoping to evoke the callous dystopian aesthetic of Ridley Scott's Blade Runner – well, they succeeded.
