1912-2004
GAP founders Doris and Donald Fisher recently placed their collection of almost 1,000 works on long-term loan with the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. A new museum wing is planned to keep large parts of the collection on display. About 10% of it is currently on view in a special show at SFMOMA as part of the museum's 75th anniversary celebration. Doris Fisher is quoted expressing her unique fondness for the minimalist paintings of Agnes Martin. In the present Fisher show there are seven Agnes Martins, painted between 1957 and 1995. They inhabit a room of their own, and it is to me an exceptionally satisfying space.
