"In the Villa Barbaro, the presence of the figure paintings serves the same function as the landscapes, objects and animals, a function that is less about presenting actually existing places and creatures, than introducing a note of realism that was key to Renaissance pictorial schemes. The purpose of these details, as well as being decorative, was to show an ordered world in which heaven and earth coexist."
