Venetian Painting (1550-1570)

Titian and workshop
Allegory of Prudence
ca. 1560-65
oil on canvas
National Gallery, London

The triple portrait above has frequently been identified as Titian's personal and familial interpretation of the traditional Three Ages of Man, with the artist himself as the elderly figure, his favorite son in the prime of life facing the viewer, and his dear nephew as the youth on the right. Titian's spectacular success both as artistic innovator and as careerist did not, despite such imagery, translate into a thriving dynasty of painters. After his death the elaborate legacy was quickly dissipated.
