"Two collective Roman enterprises on a large scale afford condensed images of the look of painting in the city as the third quarter of the sixteenth century moved towards its end.  One, the Sala Regia in the Vatican, had church histories, mainly of a secular kind, for its subjects.  . . .  The large room, of which the building was begun about 1540 to the plans of Antonio da Sangallo the Younger, was entrusted first, in 1542, to Perino del Vaga to decorate.  Before his death in 1547 he had seen to the execution of the stuccoed ceiling and designed the windows.  When Perino died the Sala became an object of contest between Francesco Salviati and Daniele da Volterra.  Daniele at first won, and held the commission between 1547 and 1550, working mainly on the stucchi (certainly those on the walls); he was then diverted to other decorations in the Vatican.  . . .  When Salviati was finally allowed to participate his behaviour was characteristically difficult and resulted in such conflict that it was decided, probably in 1563, on the suggestion of Pirro Ligorio, that the painting of the Sala should be shared out among younger artists.  . . .  Spaces were doled out to Taddeo Zuccaro, Siciolante, Livio Agresti da Forlì, and to a few lesser exponents of the Maniera mode of history painting who were as conventional as Agresti and even less talented."
