Wielding the Hose
Visiting Grandma's garden in the East Bay, Mabel got rid of her shoes and socks very quickly and took over the job of watering the pots and the borders with the hose.
Bare feet and running water and sunshine and fresh-cut grass make for a whole thrilling set of sense impressions not usually included in Mabel's everyday city life. Her parents observed just the other day that a simple trip to Walgreen's down the street still gives this child as much pleasure and excitement as a trip to Disneyland, and the same might equally be said about a trip to Grandma's ordinary suburban backyard.
