Polaroids
Today was my daughter's first day back after several days away. She took a reunion Polaroid of Mabel. They showed me a new Lego unicorn that was one of the welcome-home treats and surprises opened at breakfast to celebrate.

On my computer by this time there are so many files of photos that the organizing of them is a perpetual & self-renewing challenge. But among all the many thousands there are fairly few that show Mabel and me inside the same frame. In my latest effort to tidy things up, I got interested in trying to select the one image that best illustrated how my granddaughter and I would most typically have been spending our time together in each calendar year.

Pink Ball
This afternoon I have the happy prospect of playtime with Mabel after her nap, but I won't have access to a camera. For people who will be sorry not to see new pictures of Mabel, I have pulled up this favorite sequence from two years ago when we were playing a thrilling game of roll-and-catch in Grandma's backyard.

Nouveau Polaroids
My daughter's weekly child-rearing Polaroids now and hereafter will be brought into existence using the new clone film which pops out of the camera with variously colored borders rather than traditional white and this is a good thing from a practical viewpoint because in the future it will be easy to tell where the break came in the Polaroid archive of the Life of Mabel who was born AFTER Polaroid film had already gone out of production but whose first few years were documented anyway using dead-stock film until it became unobtainable and chemically degraded but by that time Mabel was already a little child and no longer the baby who populated all those white-bordered pictures.

Tongs
Mabel and Daddy both had birthday presents to open at Grandma's house on Saturday.
Mabel discovered three different sets of tongs in her birthday package from me. We had recently been talking about the great usefulness of tongs and this made Mabel want some of her own. Everybody began to pick up everything in sight with tongs.

Pink Four
Grandma made a birthday cake for Mabel on Saturday. Two layers, shaped like a heart, filled with strawberries, and frosted. She adorned the top with a 4 made of pink meringue kisses from Miette. Then she arranged the presents, and waited for Mabel to arrive.
Grandma gave Mabel a pair of large foam dice. They played a game, each throwing one, to see who would get a higher number. Mabel's job was to count the dots and announce who won.
