Spitalfields Silk

1735

The Victoria & Albert Museum in London preserves a large collection of original textiles created at the Spitalfields silk factories in London during the 18th and 19th centuries. All patterns were woven, rather than printed. The industry had been set up late in the 17th century by Protestant refugees from France, forced to flee their own country by Louis XIV when he revoked the Edict of Nantes.
