European religious paintings, 16th-17th centuries

Joos van Cleve
Last Judgment
ca. 1520-25
Metropolitan Museum of Art

Christ's billowing red draperies seem to leap away from his round yellow full-body halo with its throbbing violet border. Against the infinite clear blue of the sky, indigo clouds support the Savior above a wide green lawn. Suspended in hover-mode to left and right are rainbow-winged angels, one all in purple, one all in orange. The naked and the dead in throngs arise from the earth, white shrouds clinging.

Other famous episodes and narratives derived from the Christian religion are lined up below, chosen like the episode above for persuasive color and bold form.
