Portrait painter François-Hubert Drouais (1727-1775) gained favor early on with Mme. du Barry (below, with pink roses). She was the final woman to occupy the post of official mistress to the aging Louis XV. With her patronage secured, the success of Drouais as fashionable Parisian limner became inevitable.
