European images of dead Christ in the tomb, 16th-18th centuries

There was a Mannerist-Baroque vogue for close-up images of the dead Christ with angel-attendants during the traditional three-day sojourn inside the Tomb. Painters embraced this fashion as an opportunity to work with heroic nudes derived from classical sculpture.
