"[Joseph and Potiphar's Wife, above] and its pendant Amnon and Tamar [below] were acquired by the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC, in 1986, from the collection of Alexander Charles Robert Vane-Tempest-Stewart, 9th Marquess of Londonderry (1937-2012), Wynyard Park, Stockton-on-Tees, whose ancestor, Charles Stewart, 3rd Marquess of Londonderry (1778-1854), owned [the pair] from at least 1833."

"The semi-nude figure of Cleopatra is based on that of Potiphar's wife in the Joseph and Potiphar's Wife in the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC, painted at the beginning of 1649, though her pose and attire are slightly varied. She is even closer in these respects to her counterpart in Guercino's earlier Suicide of Cleopatra in the Palazzo Rosso, Genoa, painted in 1648.

"In a letter of 2 August 1649, Guercino promised the Conte Paolo Parisetti of Reggio Emilia that he would paint him a Susanna for a price of 130 ducats. . . . It remained in the Parisetti family collection until the beginning of the 20th century, when it was acquired for the museum in Parma."
