"This painting was listed under the year 1652 by [Carlo Cesare] Malvasia, who noted, however, that it remained in the artist's studio at his death.  . . .  It must have been quickly sold by Guercino's heirs, since by 1684 it graced the residence of Giovanni Francesco Brignole-Sale in the Palazzo Rosso, Genoa, where it has remained ever since."

"As Evelina Borea noted in her 1975 catalogue, the painting is much darkened by the oxidization of the pigments and some fire damage.  [Luigi] Salerno identified the commission as that reported by Malvasia in 1652: 'Un Sebastiano per il Card. Macchiavelli'.  Cardinal Macchiavelli's payment of 150 ducats (187 scudi) 'per il quadro fattogli di san Sebastiano con un Puttino di sopra' was entered in the account book on 29 October 1652."
