Anthony Caro Cascade Series - Mouchoir 1990 steel (diploma work) Royal Academy of Arts, London |
"Anthony Caro's Mouchoir spills over the edge of its plinth and twists down to the floor. The rusted and waxed steel has a fabric-like feel. The work is from Caro's Cascades series, made between 1989 and 1990. This was rooted in Caro's table-top sculptures of the 1960s, which, as Tim Marlow observed, 'superficially returned sculpture to the plinth but effectively explored both the surface on which the pieces were now placed and the space below into which they fell, sometimes gently, often dynamically."

Norman Ackroyd St Kilda - Stac Lee and Stac an Armin 1990 etching and aquatint (diploma work) Royal Academy of Arts, London |
"Standing at 165 and 191 metres high respectively, Stac Lee and Stac an Armin are the tallest sea stacks in Britain. Located 100 miles west of the Scottish mainland, they form part of the archipelago of St Kilda. Although St Kilda was inhabited for thousands of years, its isolated position eventually led to the last few residents being evacuated in 1930. Today it is a nature reserve and world heritage site."

"Rooney studied at Wimbledon School of Art from 1962, entering the Royal College of Art two years later, where he worked under Professor of Painting Carel Weight. Rooney went on to win a scholarship to the British School at Rome in 1969. Rooney recalled that this picture 'was painted in a rented studio in St Leonards-on-Sea' at the time he was attempting to build a house in London."
Gillian Ayres Salix 1990-91 oil on canvas (diploma work) Royal Academy of Arts, London |
"Salix derives its title from a genus of deciduous trees and shrubs. At the time Gillian Ayres painted the work she was living in the valley dividing North Devon and Cornwall, where, according to writer Alexandra Pringle, she cultivated 'a garden of rare trees and bushes, retiring Old English roses, gaudy marigolds and purple hibiscus.' The period in which Ayres painted Salix also coincided with her first visits to India."

Leonard McComb Sgt Bert Bowers 1991 oil on canvas (diploma work) Royal Academy of Arts, London |
"This portrait of Chelsea Pensioner Bert Bowers required approximately twenty sittings over a period of five months. The meticulous depiction of an old soldier can be traced to 18th-century 'fancy pictures' and the assumption that the hardships of the campaigning life were etched on the face, readily transferable by the artist to the figure of a prophet or patriarch."

Roger De Grey Interior / Exterior 1992 oil on canvas (diploma work) Royal Academy of Arts, London |
"Roger De Grey represents the view from his studio over the garden through floor-to-ceiling windows that blur the boundary between the two – the objects on the table treated with the same care and attention as the foliage on the far side of the glass. Yet the simple and muted elements within the studio, rendered geometrically, stand in distinct opposition to the dense web of coloured brushstrokes representing the outdoor world."
