Months ahead of time the question would come up about what kind of cake Mabel Watson Payne wanted for her birthday. Always, always she would answer watermelon cake and laugh as if there never could really be watermelon cake. That made her Daddy decide to make a watermelon cake that looked like a convincing watermelon. He succeeded.
Saturday's birthday party in Golden Gate Park was the second time this week that Mabel went through the cake & candles ceremony, and I got the strong impression each time that she literally believed in the magical power of being transformed into a two-year-old by blowing out the candles on the cake.
After the singing and the clapping, there came the most exciting part of all – to watch the cutting of the cake with a very large knife.
