According to the exhibition catalog, Heavenly Visions: Shaker Gift Drawings & Gift Songs, many of the concoctions seen here began life as divine inspirations. These were put on paper by women recognized within the group as spirit-mediums. Their creations (dating mainly from the first half of the 19th century) were assessed and displayed in 2001 at UCLA's Hammer Museum.
