European Portraits, 1600-1610

Michael Janz van Mierevelt
Portrait of Ambrogio Spinola
1609
Rijksmuseum

This begins a sequence looking at 17th century portraits, decade succeeding decade. The various costume components are familiar in themselves, but sorting those components into chronological sequence requires a certain amount of organization. By grouping the portraits into single decades, perhaps it will be possible to observe certain fashionable elements of dress (such as the starched ruff seen here) as it rises in popularity and elaboration, and eventually diminishes or even disappears.
