Guido Reni (1575-1642) – One of the greatest Italian painters of the 17th century, a subtle colourist, a master of graceful line and composition.  His unique synthesis of "naturalism" and "idealizing" classicism was an important influence.  Although few, his portraits are notable for psychological penetration.  From the 19th century until recently, his reputation was tarnished by the stereotypic, sentimental production of his studio, mostly the work of assistants, from the last 10 years of his life.
