In 1548 Hieronymus Cock (1518-1570) founded a publishing business and print shop in Antwerp called the House of the Four Winds. In the etching above, the shop is on the corner at right (with a man standing on one of the doorways). In 1548 Hieronymus Cock had just spent two years in Rome absorbing dominant artistic fashions and the masterpieces of the past. He published some of the earliest printed images of the recovered antique sculptures attracting so much attention in Rome, and consequently in Europe. His role as a promulgator of visual styles and fashions is demonstrated below, with a range of the work he either sold on the open market or was commissioned to do for patrons.
