Hans Baldung Wild Horses Fighting 1534 woodcut British Museum |
"The existence of herds of wild horses in the woods and mountains of Alsace is recorded during the sixteenth century, and the subject of fighting wild horses was known to interest Baldung. Taken together, however, these three prints present an unusual and unforgettable series of wild horses overwhelmed by the power of their own sexuality, for which no specific visual or literary source appears to exist and no satisfactory explanation has been made other than the general context of Baldung's work. It is difficult to imagine such an explicit theme appearing on this scale in the work of any other artist." – from curator's notes at the British Museum
